The Garton Family
A Family of True Heroes Come to Ireland

Most parents can appreciate the stresses involved in raising children. Bev and Paul Garton of Glengowrie, Adelaide, South Australia have gone above and beyond the call of duty in raising a family. The couple, both 60, have not only raised four of their own children but have also taken in seven children – all of whom have a disability. Sadly, Nicholas passed away in 1997, the family still celebrate his birthday on May 19th. Currently five of the children live with the family on a full time basis.

Bev and Paul are parents to Therese (21, has Down Syndrome), Liam (20, has Autism and Tourettes Syndrome), Michael (19, has Down Syndrome), Lauren (16, has Down Syndrome) and Samantha (6, has Spina Bifida). “Our enjoyment is being with the children, that is our fulfillment. That is our life. We are really happy doing it” says Bev. “We are just ordinary people being parents – we just have a different sort of family”.

But while the couple shun the spotlight, they have received praise from many in Australia – “it has never been about themselves, it has always been about their children and every parent would have the utmost respect for Bev and Paul Garton”. Eamonn Geraghty - Project Leader

The family survives on the small income derived from carer pension, partner's allowance and disability state pension.

It is the wish of Paul and Bev Garton that any media attention on this trip to Ireland will focus on the promotion of the Special Olympics and disabilities in Ireland, Australia and the world in general.

Special Olympics
“I was delighted to win 3 golds at the Special Olympics Games 2003, it changed my life. My chance to come back to Ireland with my brother, sisters and parents is fantastic!”

Therese Garton,
Australian Champion
